Description
Ginkgo biloba belongs to the Gymnosperms: the seeds are not protected by the ovary. The structures shaped like apricots produced by female specimens are not fruits, but seeds covered by a fleshy coating. It is an ancient tree whose origins date back 250 million years ago.
The plant, native to China, is commonly called ginkgo or ginco, or maidenhair tree. It is a tree that can reach a height of 30–40 meters, with a crown width of up to 9 meters.
It has deciduous leaves, 5–8 cm long, with long petioles, light green in color, with a typical fan-shaped (labeliform) slightly bilobed leaf, characterized by a high number of dichotomous veins.
It is widely used as an ornamental plant in parks, avenues, and gardens, and its use for creating bonsai is also common.
